A little piece of home in the Philippines....

The last 3 weeks have been totally awesome as I have had the privilege of introducing one of my longest friends to my life here in the Philippines! It’s been like having a little piece of home here with me and I’m not just referring to the tins of Heinz baked beans and Cadbury chocolate she brought with her Mmmmm. Kirsten was with me for just under 3 weeks and fully got involved in all of the activities and events here at the academy. 

She also got to meet all of the significant and awesome people who are such a big part of my life and an inspiration to me! Although having pictures and videos to send home it can never accurately portray just what life is really really like, day in and day out. Kirsten came to quickly see that no 2 days are ever the same and things can change at very short notice and life at CGA never stops! I feel incredibly blessed by Kirsten’s visit firstly, that she would take the time and expense to come all this way to see me and secondly, I watched as she was pushed far beyond her comfort zone and did things I never imagined she would. I am certain this trip has encouraged her faith and trust in God amongst many other things......but......that is her story to tell and so I shall leave it to her.........keep your eyes peeled for her blog!!!

Kirsten was thrown straight into all activities the minute she stepped off the plane as we were all in full flow planning and preparing for City Gates Academy annual Family Day. Family Day is a day of celebration where all the parents and children from the academy are divided into different teams to compete in games, cheering and a range of other tasks and challenges for the top prize. This year for the first time the youth club from City Gates also came as a team. Many of our children attending the youth club have absent parents either working abroad or working as street vendors having little time to join with their children for events such as family day. As City Gates really is one big family the youth stood with them as aunts and uncles and it was so great to have them there to up the competition!! Some of the tasks included ‘the tallest tower’ and a photo scavenger hunt! Competition was fierce and all wanted to win the top prize. What a fantastic day and congratulations to the white team for 1st place! As if that wasn’t enough there was one more special event performed by none other than the City Gates Academy staff. A very funny, impromptu dragon dance led by Pastor Glenn! Certainly was a lot of fun and I am sure made a lot of other people laugh. Needless to say a great day was had by all!

Following the success of our Christmas programme the mall requested us to return for our recognition and graduation day. So we are busy practising and madly preparing costumes and props! It really is great for the academy that we are being noticed now in the wider community. Not only did they request us to return but we are been given the prime location, at the heart of the mall during peak time. No other school has ever been granted permission to perform there so it is yet another great achievement for City Gates Academy! This year our theme is “Reach for the stars”. As we take time to celebrate the great success of another year at City Gates Academy we will be taking the opportunity to remind and encourage the children that they have the potential to ‘reach the stars’ to achieve their hopes, dreams and ambitions and be successful in the future. In a world that would look down on their situation and say “you cannot achieve” we know that Our God is more than able and I just love the verses in Ephesians 3:2-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen. I hope that you will join my prayer for these little ones; that they will have dreams and ambitions and believe that He that is in them is greater and can help them achieve more than they could imagine and ‘reach for the stars!’ Amen

Party, party, party.....that’s how we roll at CGA!

After having missed out on one party there was no way I was going to miss out on any more! Valentine’s day is a big deal here in the Philippines, although it certainly feels less commercial. The whole month of February is known as love month and usually events are planned to coincide with this theme. It is not just for those with partners but a celebration of love for each other so often many schools hold their family days in February. As a church there were at least 3 parties organised for February. Having missed the first one, singles night for the youth, I was invited to join the couples’ night! Nothing to do with me offering to make the cake I’m sure!!! Ha ha. It was a great night, celebrating with many couples who have committed themselves to one another. One couple were celebrating 51 years of marriage whilst we also had some of the couples that were recently married at our CGA mass wedding, celebrating their 1 month anniversary! It was great once again to see church members and parents from CGA coming together and building friendships. We enjoyed some great food, great music and danced the night away thanks to our resident DJ Pastor Glenn!!!!! After 1 week in bed and isolation it was so good to be free and I certainly wasn’t shy when it came to the dancing! City Gates Church certainly know how to party and have a great time.

No one at City Gates is ever left out and last Sunday afternoon (February 26) the children from Sunday School also had their own Heart’s Day Party led by a fantastic team, Teachers Mae and Majal and the City Gates Youth. The children were so excited and many of them arrived an hour before just so that they did not miss. Since arriving I have got to know quite a few of the children attending the children’s Sunday School and Youth club. There is a little group of children aged between 9-11 who I often see near our local shop. They come from the most deprived background and the oldest one is no longer attending school as they cannot afford the books she needs. Often she misses youth club feeding on a Saturday morning because she is needed to sell sweets and cigarettes under the bridge near to City Gates. I always take time to talk to her when I see her and recently on Sunday mornings she has been coming to stand beside me and hold my hand during worship. It made me wonder, “how often does someone hold you hand and give you a hug?” we all need to feel closeness to another human no matter what age we are! This Sunday she came really early to the party, in fact I think she even stayed after the morning service. She wanted to make sure she looked her best, she asked to have a shower and then asked me to help her fix her hair. She desperately wanted to have straight hair. So, of course I have strengtheners here, how could I refuse! It was my pleasure and she looked beautiful (see picture). In the end I ended up straightening 5 children’s hair in total....I think word spread very quick! The party was fantastic even the adults enjoyed the afternoon with lots of games, food and as is becoming very customary here at City Gates....dancing!!! To finish off the evening all the teachers and volunteers headed to our favourite local place to eat (mostly because only place in Cogeo and it has unlimited rice refill....bonus!) and enjoy spending time with each other. I have said it before and I will continue to say it; I am so impressed by the commitment of City Gates youth they are a complete credit to their church, their willingness to serve and be involved in the activities at the church is incredible and I admire them greatly.

Even though the month of February had gone we still had one more party to go! Each year CGA hold a special lunch of appreciation for those parents who have shown commitment over and above what has been required. Each of the parents are required to work 12 hours per month (equivalent to 30 minutes a day) in exchange for their children’s education. However, we have a group of parents who are so diligent and committed to City Gates that they often put in more hours than required. For many of our them City Gates has become a second home as they experience friendship and belonging as well as being able to enjoy the open space and beautiful grounds. The party was a thank you and recognition for their hard work this academic year. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and had great fun singing along to karaoke – even Kirsten joined in with a song!!! For around £10 we were able to hire our own Karaoke machine for a whole 24 hours. It is one of their favourite things to do and of course as you probably have guessed already not only was there singing but also..........you got it, dancing!!!!

As I finish, even though could go on and on with lots more that has happened in-between all the parties, I am reminded of the passage in scripture from John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. And we certainly live life to the full here at City Gates, it really is awesome! Despite being super super busy for the first time in my life I feel energised! Work doesn’t drain me anymore but revitalises me for the next day. I am excited by the new opportunities God is continually presenting us with at City Gates and know that there is even more to come! Remember whatever you are going through, if it is robbing you and bringing you down that Jesus declared He brings life and not just life but life to the FULL! I pray that if you are not experiencing that fullness of life that you are able to make more time for Jesus, as He is the only one who can restore you, mentally, physically and spiritually and bring you life to the FULL! Up and Running.......@ CGA School Trip

I just want to start this week’s blog with praise and thanksgiving because the God that I serve is so incredible and awesome! Psalm 107:1 starts with ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; His love endures forever.” How true and timely to the word of the Lord is and I have so much to be thankful for. He truly has been good to me. After the recent accidents and ailments I am so happy to report that I am again up and about, out of quarantine and fully recovered. In fact I am feeling even better than before I was sick. A verse that is very special to me from Isaiah 40:31 says: “but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” I said before I wasn’t sure what the lesson would be, but was sure that there would be one, and God does not disappoint and I am so happy to be soaring again with the eagles! Where I belong!

One of my biggest fears when leaving home, family and friends was a fear of loneliness and homesickness. It is true you can be surrounded by hundreds of people yet still feel lonely and homesick! So being confined, not allowed to see anyone, it would be natural to worry that this could happen to me. But God promised me, the day I felt the call to come back to the Philippines that He would be my EVERYTHING. I would not be in need of anything. As I look back at that time I can totally testify that he was my everything. I could easily be forgiven for being homesick or down during that time, and yes I did miss home, my Mum and Dad, my bed...lol...but I was never homesick! In fact through it all I kept smiling, making jokes (thanks too to Pastor Glenn who asked if I was enjoying my holiday!!!!), and remained in perfect peace. Why? Because “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you”. When you trust that God holds your life in his hands, you are where He has called you to be; you can rest and be in perfect peace. It doesn’t always come naturally or easily but when you focus on God everything else pails into insignificance. I write this hopefully to encourage you too. It’s a testimony to how much God cares for us, no matter what we go through. If you are feeling grounded at the moment, or overwhelmed by your circumstances remember God is a God of peace and when you place your cares and focus on Him, he will give you perfect peace and rest in preparation for the new and exciting things He has for you.

He certainly had exciting things ready for me! I was so pleased to be well again as I would not have wanted to miss the City Gates Academy school trip for anything! On Friday the whole of City Gates Academy including the parents went to the zoo and park. There were over 100 of us in total and it was my first experience leading a school trip in a foreign country. For all those teachers out there you will know what was going through my mind! For all you non-teachers out there the misconception is that it is an easy day off as not having to teach but by the time you get home you feel as though you have been teaching for 5 days!!! You spend the whole day counting heads, checking children, always thinking one step ahead.....but there is no way I would want to miss it. It is one of the days as a teacher you most look forward in the school calendar as you watch the children doing something they ordinarily would not have the chance or opportunity to do and how much more so for the children of City Gates Academy.

The whole day was a huge success even if it did start at 5:30am!!! As I wrote in my newsletter recently I am on a steep learning curve and one of the lessons I am learning is that I live in Manila, Philippines. Sounds obvious, I know, but there are little things like organising the time to leave that require thinking Pinoy!! Living in the most densely populated city in the world means there are also a lot of people trying to travel in the morning so getting from one side to the other will take time. A little fact that often slips my mind! My suggestion of leaving at 9 would mean we wouldn’t arrive at the zoo until nearly 12 and would be travelling at the hottest and smoggiest time. So at 5:30am we all piled into 3 jeepneys and off we went for our day at the zoo!


 

The day couldn’t have been more perfect and had we gone with my plan of leaving later we would have missed all the excitement of feeding time at the zoo! As we arrived all the animals were being fed which was so exciting as it meant the animals were really active. For so many of the children it was their first time to see live animals and they were so wide-eyed and excited as they watched the animals eating! By far the favourite animal of the children was the enormous elephant and I must admit watching him eat at least 10 loaves of bread in about 2 minutes was fascinating. In just 2 moves of his trunk he had folded the loaf in half and deposited straight into his mouth. Amazing!


Following on from the zoo we went to Luneta park to have our picnic. Temperatures by this point were rising to nearly 36 degrees so we quickly sought the sanctuary of the shade. It was such a beautiful location. Water fountains in the background, beautiful trees and the tranquillity you only get from being nature.......well........almost! With 60 children and parents it wasn’t quite so tranquil but we did enjoy a great laugh together with lots of banter as they mocked me for bringing my egg sandwiches! I think they all thought I was crazy as they kept offering me rice “Teacher Lynette you must eat rice, you will be hungry later!” I really enjoyed the picnic as it was yet again another opportunity for me to get alongside the parents and interact. It was also a chance for me to share with them a bit of my personal testimony and story as to why I was here in the Philippines.

 

In the past few months I have really felt the parents acceptance and they are more willing now to engage in conversation and open up to me. A big part of that has been down to the improvement in my Tagalog but also as the parents have taken time to get to know me through the phonics classes, other events here at the school I think they have realised I am not so scary after all! It was great to get the opportunity to be able to tell them how much I know God loves me but more importantly how much he loves them too. That it’s not always easy to step out in faith but that I know because of His promise He will provide everything I need.

We finished off the day with a traditional group photo involving all the children, parents and staff. A great reminder of what an awesome school trip we had. Then it was time for home! As is customary for any school trip, especially those I am on, the journey home is not a time for sleeping but singing! I’m not so sure the children were that impressed but the parents certainly enjoyed themselves as we sang some of the songs we sing here at the academy. Yet again City Gates Academy never fails to disappoint and I know that the children will never forget their first trip to the zoo, I know I certainly will treasure the memory forever!


As you see I have certainly made up for the time I spent in isolation! It has been a great week and as I write I am already looking forward to this week. Not only is my longest friend Kirsten coming to visit but we have another party for the parents who have been so committed here at City Gates Academy and our family day is on Saturday. As I said at the beginning, I am so thankful God has completely healed my body and given me energy to help me not just run but soar! Recent events!

Well......firstly apologies for lack of blogging but as you will see things have been a little busy around here including weddings, accidents and illnesses!

 Let’s start at the very beginning! Having waved goodbye to Mum and Dad and sending them on their way back to the UK it was time to get back into life at City Gates Academy and we certainly had a lot to be getting on with. 

Every year City Gates Academy holds a mass wedding for any parents wishing to get married. In the Philippines many couples opt to ‘live together’ rather than get married not for ideological reasons but financial. A wedding can be very costly on a family as it is a traditional expectation that you must invite not just close family but the whole neighbourhood also. As I have said so many times before City Gates is a community and we not only care for the children but also their parents too. Research has shown that children are more likely to succeed in their education and have greater security and life chances when raised in a household where their parents are married. So on 20th January 2012 City Gates was beautifully transformed into a wedding venue where 8 couples tied the knot!

 It was a spectacular day and such a privilege to have been part of. Everything from hair and make-up to marriage licence and catering was all covered by wonderful sponsors making it possible for these 8 couples to have the wedding they have always dreamed of. Who would have thought that when I agreed to come to volunteer at City Gates my role would included wedding coordinator, wedding cake baker, florist and finally wedding singer!!!! I’m not sure how I managed to volunteer myself for so many roles....especially the 8 wedding cakes! Trying to ice in temperatures of over 30 degrees was no easy feat as no sooner had I taken the icing out of the fridge that it started to melt! Nevertheless I persevered and although not perfect I know that all the couples appreciated them! All those times helping Mum with cakes actually came in useful.....God is so amazing, He provided me with the training and skills years before so that when the time was right I could use them to be a blessing to others! Incredible!

 Again, it was such a pleasure to be serving alongside members of City Gates church in real community. Most of the couples getting married were unknown to the church members yet they gave up their time, working till way past midnight the night before cooking, decorating and making sure these couples get the perfect day for their wedding. True servanthood! I think sometimes in our consumer driven society where it’s easier to buy than give up our time we miss out on these important moments that really foster and develop community and real relationships. I know I have often been guilty of that and whilst yes it would have been easier to have bought 8 wedding cakes than make them the time I spent with my friends and the message of love and care for the recipients was worth something money just cannot buy. Please remember these 8 couples and pray for them as they begin this new chapter in the lives together.

 After the excitement of the weddings it was time to get excited about training! I know I know I am so sad getting excited over teacher training but for me I really was exciting! It had been months, literally months in the planning and at times I felt like it was never going to happen. Cancellation after cancellation, rescheduling after rescheduling but finally at the end of January I held the first of what has been 3 teacher training sessions for the local pre-school teachers. As I wrote months ago in my blog I really have a desire to make an impact on this community, to use the skills and training I have to be a blessing and an agent of change to make a difference. The training sessions have gone really well, despite during one of them being unable to hear in one ear, which was really frustrating! It has been an opportunity to get to know the teachers better and build friendships and community with them. As the training sessions have gone on I can see them starting to warm to me and open up and we certainly have enjoyed a lot of laughter and fun too! There are more dates scheduled and I am already looking forward to next academic year where hopefully I can get even more involved. I am always learning to be patient I think it will be a continual life lesson for me. But many times I would despair and think it was never going to happen but this testimony to God’s faithfulness just shows you should never give up on what God has called you to do. It will happen in His perfect timing. Whatever you are waiting for don’t give up, if God has called you to do it be patient and wait for His direction then all you do will succeed! Please continue to pray for this opportunity that God would continue to extend His favour in our community.

 Finally, it has not been an easy few weeks for me recently and it has felt at times like one thing after another and me questioning “what’s next?” The past week especially has really knocked me for six causing me to take some enforced rest, much against my will! I have never been one for lying in my bed all day! It started a few weeks ago when I got a blocked ear that was frustrating to say the least, but was quickly followed by a rather nasty accident involving my new sandals and a set of stone stairs and a trip to A&E. Which, considering my track record in the UK, I am surprised it took 10 months before my first visit there!!!!! Thankfully X-rays showed no broken bones although my arm needed to be supported in a sling for a week. I must admit it was incredibly painful! One week later and looking forward to being back to normal when I start to feel really sick! Oh no! Sickness I can sort of cope with but I did begin to panic when my arms and legs were completely covered in a rash! Back to hospital we went, thanks to my great friend Nadette for coming with me and keeping me smiling despite all! Following blood tests it was thought that I most likely had some sort of tropical measles which meant that I had to be isolated from everyone for at least 5 days and most importantly.....rest! Not a word I am overly familiar with!!! I am just at the end of those 5 days and feel very drained and sleepy still! It’s not easy when you are such an active person to feel so lifeless and lacking energy to do anything. However, I am sure that there will be a lesson in all of this and no doubt I will blog and let you know when I receive it!! For now I know I must rest so that when I am ready to get back into things I will be more effective in what I do for His glory! I have learnt in all things to give thanks and I will never fail to sing praises of how great God is. He certainly has been my tower and refuge and strength over the past few weeks when I could easily despair. I can say in good times and bad that “it is well with my soul” and He has never left me!

Wow.......wow.......wow! I have so much to shout for joy about, to declare His praises for He is truly wonderful! So much to write about but lets start with the Christmas parties!! Following my appeal for help for our Christmas programme we received almost triple what we asked for!!!!! A big thank you to all who supported. It was an incredible blessing and meant that not only did we cover the costs of the children's Christmas party at McDonald's but we were also able to give the children and parents breakfast, transport to the mall and pay for other expenses! Amazing, I am totally in awe God really is true to His promises and provides for everything we need.

The day itself was totally awesome! The Christmas play went without a hitch, in fact it was perfect! All remembered lines, dance steps and despite never having practised at the venue the children were completely un phased! It was more the teachers, staff and parents who were experiencing the nerves....but there was no need it was spectacular! 

Not only did we impress those who came to watch but we also impressed the management of the mall. It was commented to me that "we have a lot of schools and yours is one of the best!" and as a result they are wanting to come visit the school and look at more possible partnerships! So exciting and just think of the potential!! 

 

 

In true city gates style our Christmas activities were not finished, in fact they had only just started! The day after we had our Saturday morning youth club Christmas party where more than 150 children who regularly attend every Saturday were invited for a morning of games, prizes and of course food! Following after this my parents arrived from the UK just in time for the combined city gates church and academy party.


This year we decided it would be great to have one big joint party, a perfect opportunity for the church and academy to come together make friends and continue to develop community. It started with a concert
 where each of the ministries in the church participated either with a drama, dance or song. We ended the concert with an awesome time of worship! It was incredible to be outside jumping and declaring loudly "joy to the world" making sure our whole community heard us declaring Jesus has come!

After food came games and dancing! City Gates has been so blessed this year with many donations that are always given to those who need. With great giveaways the games were taken very seriously and there was such a wonderful atmosphere! 


 

 

Christmas has been a very special time this year and certainly unforgettable. It was so wonderful to have mum and dad with me and for them to meet all the friends I have here. It made me really appreciate the many blessings of friendships God has given me. Christmas was spent in the mountains and we had the privilege of visiting some of the indigenous tribes living in the mountains on Christmas eve. It certainly was a humbling experience and an honour to be welcomed into their homes on Christmas eve.

Christmas day itself was spent with around 25 others, mostly missionaries also serving here in the Philippines. We had a great time of fellowship, playing games and eating turkey and Christmas pudding (thanks to Mum!) outside in the sunshine! Not a present opened yet I can honestly say it was one of the best Christmases ever as we gathered together as one big family in Christ to celebrate the greatest gift ever, the true meaning of Christmas.....JESUS!

I pray for you that you too experienced the truth behind all the busyness, presents and noise?! As we enter a New Year, 2012 we have so much to be thankful for and we carry with us an incredible light! The light of the world has come, He is alive today and has the power to still change lives!
